Call for Applications for the C. Dallett Hemphill Summer Insurrect! 2026 Internship

The McNeil Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania is co-sponsoring a summer internship with Insurrect! The stipend for the internship is $4,000. These internships are open to students currently enrolled at McNeil Center Consortium institutions and are designed to introduce students to professional work in public history settings. Interns are expected to work 35 hours per week for 8 weeks. Beginning and end dates will be arranged between Insurrect! and the intern, but should be concluded by September 1, 2026. One half of the stipend will be paid at the beginning of the internship, and the other half will be remitted at its completion.

In summer 2026, Insurrect! will host a summer intern to assist with editorial duties for the publication and write one (or more) essay of their own if they so choose. Insurrect! also plans to host a conference focused on the circulation of news and print media in the early Atlantic World. The intern will assist with the early stages of the production of our conference proceedings. The intern will work closely with Insurrect! editorial board members to learn about the history of media and the circulation of news in the early Atlantic World. They will assist editors with researching the history of early print media and news, culling the pieces for our print zine, and help lay the groundwork for a future special issue of a journal. Dr. Elise A. Mitchell and other board members will serve as mentors to the intern. The intern will meet with Dr. Mitchell on a weekly basis (virtually or in person) for check-ins related to their research and editorial work. The intern will receive acknowledgement as an editorial intern for their work on the zine and conference proceedings, as well as single-author acknowledgement for any essays published by Insurrect! While residence in Philadelphia is welcome and encouraged for this internship, interns are also welcome to work remotely.
